Metro 2033 First-Look Preview

Posted by Thierry Nguyen on Tuesday November 3, 2009 11:21 p.m.

Wacky fact for you: Russia is a good source of weird, dystopian sci-fi fiction to turn into videogames. First off, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl is loosely based on a Russian novel which itself begat a movie adaptation also called Stalker. Well, that's similar to what is happening with Metro 2033, which is based on a different bleak/post-apocalyptic Russian novel; in fact, some of the fellows who worked on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. are now at Metro 2033's development studio, 4A Games.

Though, don't make the mistake that Metro 2033 is going to be an open-world FPS/RPG hybrid like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. In fact, the developer is taking more of a Half-Life 2 approach, where it's a focused and linear FPS experience. The developers like to cite BioShock and Half-Life 2, in that the way those games made Rapture and City 17 feel "real" and immersive (respectively), so will Metro 2033 do for the Metro City-Stations. In fact, a good two-thirds of the gameplay demonstration I see is just focused on walking around the Metro City-Stations and getting a feel for the atmosphere of the game world.
