Rules of War: A Historical Look At How War Has Influenced Game Design

Posted by 1UP Staff on Thursday November 19, 2009 10:36 p.m.

Rules of War
Stepping back from the front lines to examine how war has defined how we make games.

By John Constantine

The rule is that war is a given in video games. The second game ever made had the word right in its name. MIT's Model Railroad Club made Spacewar! to indulge their predilection for Sci-Fi pulp first and foremost, but that game nonetheless fired the medium's ...

Turbo: The Struggle To Make A Better Video Game Movie [Feature]

Posted by Brian Ashcraft on Thursday November 19, 2009 6 p.m.

With a title like Turbo, says filmmaker Jarrett Conway, it's simple to put across that the movie is either about arcade-style fighting or cars. Here, Turbo is about kicking, not cars. Simple, right?

Sure. But, getting the film made and made right wasn't so simple.

Turbo follows 4D fighting game player Hugo (Justin Chon of Twilight fame), who hopes to join a pro-team by winning a Super Turbo ...

In College, the Party Never Stops — for LAN [Feature]

Posted by Owen Good on Monday November 16, 2009 11 p.m.

Last week, more than a million users flooded Xbox Live to play Modern Warfare 2. Here's something just as impressive: In January, nearly 300 gamers will meet in person to play a game released in 2000.

Though one is obviously dwarfed by the comparison, both figures are impressive in their own right. And both speak to the health of their form of multiplayer gaming. For console games like Modern ...

We look back at the landmarks that have made Nintendo gaming's most successful company.

By Chris Kohler

It would be difficult to argue that Nintendo is not the most important and influential game company of all time. No matter what you think of its personalities, its business practices, or its products past and present, Nintendo has been the central player in the relatively ...

They Made The Wii Bowling Ball, And They're Not Done Yet [Feature]

Posted by Stephen Totilo on Wednesday November 11, 2009 9:20 p.m.

I sat in a blue room on Monday, surrounded by what some hardcore gamers might call artifacts of absurdity.

On walls around me hung a Wii bowling ball controller attachment, a Wii pool cue, Wii pom poms, and more.

Who makes this stuff? Two amiable Orthodox Jewish brothers — black pants, white shirts, beards, and an offer to their guest of some kosher pastries — sat across from me, cheerful about what ...

Head In The Clouds: Flying In Video Games [Feature]

Posted by AJ Glasser on Monday November 9, 2009 8 p.m.

There's something fantastical about flying in a video game. We can easily run, jump and swim in real life. Flight is more exotic. But we do fantasize about it. Where do you think the term "flights of fancy" comes from?

Nowhere is the realization of flight grander or more satisfying than in video games. When done right, flying in a game can leave a lasting impression on both players ...

I Clothe Gamers [Feature]

Posted by Michael McWhertor on Thursday November 5, 2009 1 p.m.

It wasn't my idea to start a clothing line. It took some convincing, gentle arm-twisting from a friend who often knows me better than I know myself. That coercion worked. We started a business.

And I had no idea what I was getting myself into at the time.

Looking back, the timing of founding Meat Bun, our video game-themed t-shirt line, makes sense. It started in Tokyo, following an ...

Open Season: Hunting Games Round-Up
We try some of this year's animal killing simulators to find out if they're actually any good.

By Justin Haywald

Hunting games have a bad reputation. Duck Hunt got a free pass, but ever since, animal shooting expeditions have been mocked by hardcore gamers, and a unending deluge of budget PC titles ...
