What’s The Least-Successful MMORPG?

Posted by Hib on Wednesday October 8, 2008 3:15 a.m.

Most people would say that World of Warcraft is the most successful MMORPG.

Why? Because of WoW’s success…with ten million subscriptions, it’s the pinnacle of success in the MMORPG world. This fact leads to endless proclamations of “the next WoW-Killer” every time a new MMO is announced.

I’m as tired of the “Who’s the next top dog?!?!11?!” crap as the next guy, so I ...

Jeff…

Posted by Hib on Wednesday October 1, 2008 2:47 a.m.

Jeff Freeman was an “internet friend”…someone I never had the pleasure to meet in person, but someone that I had come to know through his blog, this blog and numerous emails and other communication. In fact, I had just fired one off to him…not five minutes before I heard the news…an email I’ll never get a response to.

However, don’t be fooled by the word ...

The Leveling Pact…Commerce Waiting To Happen

Posted by Hib on Tuesday September 30, 2008 1:02 a.m.

Last week, NCSoft made a fairly major announcement…their Mission Architect content for “Issue 13″ in City of Heroes/Villains wasn’t going to be there.

Cue the clouds of Forum Doom.

But wait! They’ve got a ton of things that are going to be in Issue 13 (the CoX name for a free content update), and quite a few of them weren’t originally supposed to be there ...

Comp This: A One-Year Anniversary Rant

Posted by Hib on Tuesday September 16, 2008 11:30 a.m.

(I apologize in advance…not much of the usual hilarity and hijinks here today.)

Okay, I’ll admit this topic has been talked to death already. Scott talked about it. Mark Jacobs used the power of drama to discuss it. Jeff Freeman nailed it (as usual).

I’m talking, of course, about Tobold being a faithless Commie who kills kittens with salad forks for fun ever since he received a ...

The Next Stephen Hawking May Currently Be A Night Elf Mohawk

Posted by Hib on Wednesday September 10, 2008 12:46 a.m.

As you and I both know, video gaming has no redeeming qualities, and certainly not MMORPGs, which are well known to lead to carpal-tunnel syndrome, the heartbreak of psoriasis and the rising price of lima beans.

However, it’s nice to see that some are finally starting to notice some of the positive influences that come from MMOs. Constance Steinkuehler, described by the article at Wired magazine as “a game ...

Battle.net 2.0 feature list [Battle.net]

Posted by Stuart Houghton on Friday September 5, 2008 12:20 a.m.

Diablo III fan site DIII.net has a list of known and rumored features in Blizzard's revised Battle.net online gaming service.

Battle.net has fallen by the wayside since it's late nineties heyday but when Blizzard spoke to Kotaku back in June they were keen to stress that the new 'n' improved service would be a centerpiece of the Diablo III and StarCraft II experience.

The confirmed ...

Buy Your Way Into The WAR Open Beta

Posted by Hib on Wednesday August 27, 2008 12:31 a.m.

The debate over RMT (real money transactions, or real money trade, or “Hey Mom! Can I borrow the credit card? I need ten gold and a mount!”) has been going on for quite some time, with both sides firmly entrenched in the foxholes of their position. I’m not here to attempt to change anyone’s mind, but this has to be the most interesting (and ridiculous) thing I’ve ...

Does MMO Stand For Montauk Monster Online

Posted by Hib on Thursday August 14, 2008 11:30 a.m.

I’d like to throw something out for fun, so just hang with me for a minute; we’ll return to MMO-land momentarily. Recently, we’ve had a spate of “cryptological discoveries” in the news:

Hib Has A CoW

Posted by Hib on Tuesday August 12, 2008 11:28 p.m.

In my gaming career, I’ve belonged to more guilds than you can shake a gnome at, which is a lot of fun, and an activity I heartily recommend. I’ve formed more than my share, including the gang over at Alliance of Heroes, a group I formed in City of Heroes beta that is still going today (editor’s note: Hey guys!), and I’ve joined quite a few ...

Community Management Is A Skill-Based Art Form

Posted by Hib on Thursday August 7, 2008 7:07 p.m.

Sanya Weathers has an interesting post up over at Eating Bees about the way some MMORPG developers interacting with their game’s community on forums. (Her “25 Point Drama” is both true and hilarious.)

As I’ve said before, I’m a 20+year veteran of broadcast radio, and the entire “devs should post too” argument has a parallel in our business.

To set up my credentials, I’ve won ...
