I kind of miss the days when games were judged on their game-playing merit alone. I'm a little concerned about how far we (the game industry) are into the licensed four-page-ad marketing blitz era these days, which may be a natural evolution of the industry. But I'm always worried when we put more emphasis on glitz and production values than on the game. That's a trend that looks good for a while until you realize there's no game industry any more. If we don't have gameplay, we can't really compete with other forms of entertainment because we can't do graphics as good as the movie industry and we can't make sounds as well as the recording industry. All we can do that's special to us is be interactive. So we have to hang on to that and make sure we do a good job.

Mario is back with more mini-games and improvements than ever before in MARIO PARTY 2. Up to four human players can participate in the game, or you can go against the AI-controlled opponents. Using a board game format, you roll the dice to determine the number of spaces you move, with a choice of several different boards the goal is to obtain the most stars and coins on your way. To keep things exciting, various interesting characters appear on the boards, such as the happy mushroom Toad and Bowser's men. You can hire Boos, the not-so-scary ghosts, to capture your rivals' coins or stars. Adding an extra layer of challenge are items you can acquire, which are useful for bonus rolls of the dice or for accessing closed areas. More than 60 intriguing mini-games will call for you to do things like bake cakes or stand your ground on a moving platform with cannons blasting away at you. The Duel Match and Practice round options, along with the great graphics, are just a few of many new features of this fast-paced game.
